RWB: TBT’s Artist of the Day!

Hey, check it out! I’m artist of the day over at TBT*!

Like a one-man Flight of the Conchords, Ryan Wendell Bauer is part comic, part writer and part comedian.

Along with his “band,” the MIDI Sixteen (“a slightly humorous reference to his keyboards and drum machines,” he writes on his Web site), he performs crazily intriguing electro-pop with touches of disco, hip-hop and comedy (all included in his most recent album, 2008′s Happy Friday). Onstage, he performs outlandish dance moves with a modest, unassuming charm and childlike goofiness.

All that will be on display this New Year’s Eve, when Bauer and DJ Cen-Flo take the stage to cover the Sugarhill Gang during WMNF’s Tribute to 1979 concert at Skipper’s Smokehouse. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Click here for details.

In 2010, Bauer says he’s resolving to “kick things into high gear” by working on his next studio album. In the meantime, click here to read Julie Garisto’s interview with Bauer from 2008.

Newbie Scenester Digs the MIDI

Huge shout outs to Alison Egan-Lodjic of Creative Loafing for the killer review of my show on Saturday night!

After dedicating the set to Michael Jackson, Bauer (pictured left) started a keyboard/synth beat as background to a conversational intro with him making puppet-like hand gestures and mixing a kind of rap/poetry-slam/haiku singing style that I had never seen or heard. I heard a girl proclaim “I love this guy! I just wanna hug him!”; my thoughts exactly.

Ladies? Let the hugging commence.
